Walking is good for you, just walking a mile a day can make a real difference to your health. It's easy to do, free, and makes you feel good !
ITV's Walk4Life day, on 25th September 2011, is all about celebrating walking - events are being run across the country on and around the 25th September, and the days before and after.
The events are free, and are open to everyone from experienced ramblers to first time walkers. In additon to the main events which are being run by the Ramblers, Active Norfolk, Natural England, Allerdale Council, Swindon Borough Council and Ramblers Cymru there are lots of smaller events run by local walking groups and organisations.
To find an event near you visit the events page and select the date or area you are interested in. To find a Walk4Life Day event click here.
Public Health Minister Anne Milton says:
“Walking is a great way to have fun together for free. Fast walking for at least ten minutes improves health and counts towards that crucial activity we all need to do each week - 150 minutes for adults and sixty minutes for children. Find your local Walk4Life and get walking.”
As well as getting people up and about, the walks will celebrate the launch of Walk4Life Miles – newly instigated 1 mile long walking routes up and down the country. Positioned in parks, along footpaths and along canals, they are easy to follow routes marked with distinctive yellow waymarkers showing the start and end. There will be 2,012 of them across England by 2012.
Walk4life Day is part of the Department of Health's Change4Life campaign, a nationwide movement which aims to help us all eat well, move more and live longer. Change4Life brings together local, commercial and governmental partners to help people all over the country understand the long-term health risks of a poor diet and sedentary lifestyle.
ITV’s Walk4Life Day will be launched in ITV regional news programmes on Monday 12th September. Tune in to your regional news programme or go to www.itv.com/walk4life to find out how you can get involved.
