Today is Shrove Tuesday and as well as remembering to buy lemons and eggs many people will be thinking about what to give up for Lent. This year how about doing something different and instead of giving something up, promise to be more active. I am going to make sure I walk for at least 30 minutes a day all through Lent. That should mean I can eat as many pancakes as I like tonight.
You don't have to be an active Christian to recognise Lent. Lots of people choose to mark Lent by giving up something both to mark the occasion and to improve their health. Chocolate and alcohol seemed to be the most common among people I know, both of which are a good idea of course, but if you are looking to improve your health being more active could be the best decision you make, and Lent might be the perfect time to make it.
Just 30 minutes a day
It isn't much. The weather forecasters are promising Spring-like conditions towards the end of the week, the snowdrops are already out and the daffodils are appearing ... it is the perfect time to get outside and feel the seasons changing.
Fitting 30 minutes of walking into your daily routine isn't difficult. You don't have to do it all in one go - 3 x 10 minute sessions is just as good. Just walking to the next bus stop might be enough, or walking to the shop instead of driving. You could suggest a walk with friends at the weekend, or walk the children to school ... once you start to think about it there are lots of opportunities.
Making sure you stick to your 30 minutes a day might require a bit of effort at first. I'm going to keep a walking diary. I plan to use our new app to record all my walks throughout the day. Then, if I haven't met my target by the end of the day I'll nip out for a short walk to make sure I have done enough. We hope lots of you will do the same, and we'd love to hear how you get on. So if you fancy taking the 30 minute challenge, and keep a record of your increased walking please tell us how you have done it, and if you feel better for it.
So, when you're making those pancakes tonight make sure you're ready to start walking them off in the morning.
