If you are finding any excuse not to go walking at the moment, this weekend could provide the incentive you need to get out there and breathe the fresh air. It's time for the ever popular Walk London Winter Wanders - a mini-walking festival of guided walks on some of the best routes in and around the Capital.
There seem to be plenty of reasons not to go out at this time of year, it's cold, often wet, and this year it seems to be constantly windy. Looking out of the window it doesn't look appealing. But, put a good coat on and find some gloves and take the risk and you'll find it isn't as bad as it looks - and you will feel so much better for it.
If you do need a bit more encouragement why not go on a guided walk. Guided walks provide a great way to see new places, learn new things and meet new people, all without the worry of having to work out where you are going !
This coming weekend Walk London are running their Winter Wanders program of guided walks. All of the walks are free - just turn up and go along. You can see a listing of them all here. The walks vary in length from just over a mile to 10 miles or more - simply choose the length of wlak that suits you. All of them are led by experienced guides who have a wealth of local knowledge to share with you. You can explore secret places, find out about history and architecture, see wildlife, or simply enjoy the walk.
Of course not everyone can get to London so here's a selection of other free guided walks on this weekend:
There are lots of Health Walk groups around the UK running regular free walks - generally anyone can go along. Many of them welcome new members and promote their walks on the events page of this site. Walks this weekend include :
- Marvellous Margate - a 3 mile walk around Margate including the seafront, parks and architecture.
- Festival Park Walk - a 2 mile walk in Staffordshire.
- Cannon Hill Park family walk - Edgbaston, 45 minute walk.
- Castle Eden Dene Weekend Walk - County Durham, 2 to 4 mile walk.
- Golden Hill and Sandyford walk - Staffordshire, 2 mile walk.
- Portrait of Werneth Low - Greater Manchester, 3 mile stroll looking at what makes the place so special.
- Stockingford Strollers - regular Sunday walk.
- Wyre Forest Sunday health walk
So there really is no excuse not to get out there and get walking this weekend.
